TBU Footwear Research Centre opens its doors to students of the new Technical Lyceum
19. June 2026The Footwear Research Centre (FRC) at Tomas Bata University in Zlín is establishing a close cooperation with the Secondary Polytechnic School – Vocational Training Centre Zlín (SPŠP). Students of the newly established field of study, Technical Lyceum – Product Design and Technology, will gain valuable practical experience directly on the university grounds.
This modern field of study responds to market needs and focuses on the basics of modern technologies, advanced materials, polymers, and composites. In the specialized part of their studies, students learn to design consumer and technical products as well as fashion accessories. The key pillar of the education consists precisely of the design and technical solutions for footwear and leather goods.
Connecting theory with practice in cutting-edge laboratories
Practical training at TBU will allow future designers and technologists to work with the latest instrumentation and consult on their projects with top scientists. At the FRC, students will experience:
- Basic principles of manufacturing composite polymer materials – they will become familiar with particulate, fiber, and hybrid laminates, and focus on the design of sandwich elements applicable in the aerospace, automotive, and consumer industries.
- Working with rubber – they will go through both theory and practical testing of rubber compound production, subsequently testing its basic physical and mechanical properties.
- Foot and gait biomechanics and diagnostics – they will acquire theoretical knowledge about types of analyses, shoe insoles, and their indication. This will include a demonstration of custom insole modification and a comprehensive practical demonstration of examining a test subject, assessing their condition, and recommending optimal solutions.
- A comprehensive introduction to the world of polymer materials – from an accessible introduction to the “Plastic Age” to a deeper understanding of polymer properties and their overall significance in today’s society.
Support for traditional Zlín industry
This cooperation significantly supports the footwear theme and the local industry, which still has very strong roots in the Zlín Region. Training a new generation of experts directly in the heart of Zlín ensures that.
